Start with the day, not the shopping list
Write down the route, weather, transport and facilities first. Then check what you own. No list fits every destination or every person.
For a day walk
- Comfortable footwear suited to the surface, with socks that fit.
- Weather protection and spare warmth appropriate to the forecast.
- A comfortable pack, drinking water and enough food.
- Navigation, a charged phone and an appropriate backup plan.
For a booked campsite
- A checked shelter and the correct pegs and poles.
- A sleeping bag and mat suitable for the overnight conditions.
- Safe food storage, clean utensils and handwashing supplies.
- A light, spare batteries and a way to take rubbish home.
Before comparing products
Read dimensions, care instructions, return terms and current manufacturer guidance. Check local access and campsite rules. Fuel-burning equipment must never be used in a tent or enclosed shelter.
