Fit and access come before litres on a label. These notes are a starting point for comparing equipment and planning a manageable outing, rather than a claim that we have personally tested every option.
Start with your own plans
Try the pack with a representative load. Adjust the shoulder straps, then assess any hip belt and chest strap without overtightening. A capacity label alone does not tell you how a bag fits your body.
Look at the practical details
Put heavier items close to your back and secure loose equipment. Keep rain protection, food and navigation accessible without unpacking everything. Use dry bags when appropriate rather than assuming every pack is waterproof.
Before you head out
Inspect attachment points, buckles and seams. Choose pockets around what you carry, not an imagined expedition. Check the retailer’s fitting and return options before committing.
A considered next step
Compare the details against your route, the expected conditions and what you already own. Read the manufacturer’s current specifications and ask a retailer about anything unclear before purchasing.
