A small plan, a familiar route and space to notice what is around you. These notes are a starting point for comparing equipment and planning a manageable outing, rather than a claim that we have personally tested every option.
Start with your own plans
Choose a route within the group’s abilities and check current access information. Distances alone can be misleading: elevation, surface and transport connections change the effort required.
Look at the practical details
Plan your start and return with daylight and weather in mind. Let someone know your route when appropriate, and agree a turnaround point rather than pushing on to complete an arbitrary distance.
Before you head out
Follow local access rules, keep dogs under appropriate control and leave no litter. Respect farmland, wildlife and other visitors. A modest, well-planned day is more useful than an ambitious outing you cannot safely finish.
A considered next step
Compare the details against your route, the expected conditions and what you already own. Read the manufacturer’s current specifications and ask a retailer about anything unclear before purchasing.
